For decades, appraisers have been stuck in a broken model. Gatekeepers such as AMCs, lenders, and portals control the flow of work, dictate timelines, and squeeze margins. Skilled professionals are treated like commodities, left reactive instead of proactive, constantly wondering where the next assignment will come from.
We know this reality because we have lived it, and we have spent our careers helping others break free from it.
Six years ago, Randy Wouters and Darren Sager met at eXp Realty and discovered a shared mission: to empower professionals to build businesses that work for them rather than the other way around. What started as a professional partnership quickly grew into a friendship and a series of ventures. Together they helped agents, loan officers, and entrepreneurs escape traditional industry limits. They proved that independence was not only possible, it was replicable.
In 2024, Randy joined DataMaster, a Class Valuation company, where he worked alongside Marty Hamilton to lead the company’s transition to HubSpot and to improve marketing, automation, and client systems. It was during this time, while listening directly to appraisers, that the pattern became undeniable. Appraisers were not struggling because they lacked skill. They were struggling because they lacked a business structure designed for independence.
The three of us, Randy, Darren, and Marty, recognized something important. Appraisers are among the most highly trained professionals in real estate, but without the right tools, systems, and client pipelines, they remain at the mercy of gatekeepers. We also knew it did not have to stay that way.
That is why we built BuildU.
We did not want to create another software subscription or another single tool. We wanted to build the only Independent Appraiser Movement, a complete business-in-a-box designed to give appraisers what they have been missing:
